Ayurveda
considers diabetes a kapha disorder of low agni (digestive fire) and offers a
variety of treatments, including the following that can be carried out under
the supervision of a qualified practitioner: Take turmeric daily to control
blood sugar (it may be taken alone or in combination with ground bay leaf and
aloe Vera gel), follow a pacifying diet, avoiding too many sweets, and
participate in a supervised pancha kanna. Consult your doctor before starting a
new regimen, diabetes should be carefully monitored.
Herbs useful in the
treatment of diabetes
1. Bael (Aegle marmelos): The
leaves of bael have anti-diabetic properties. Your statement should be
consumed, preferably with a pinch of black pepper in it.
2. Bitter gourd (Momordica
charantia): This is perhaps the most popular food in the treatment of
diabetes. The karela seed, as it is called locally, have charantin, which helps
in reducing sugars in the blood. As its name implies, is really bitter gourd
bitter and difficult to eat. But it must be consumed as much as possible bitter
(unsweetened) or their properties will be lost.
3. Fenugreek (Trigonella
foenum graecum): Fenugreek can suppress the excretion
of sugar through urine. Therefore, it can alleviate the symptoms of diabetes.
4. Garlic (Allium
sativum): Garlic has been shown to contain Ayurveda best vata
pacifying properties. Since diabetes mellitus is a vata disorder, garlic is
beneficial. Garlic contains allicin, which works in reducing the level of blood
sugar. It also causes the disintegration of cholesterol in the body.
5. Jamun (Syzygium
cumini): The jamun also known as Indian plum. It has a specific
action on the pancreas, which controls the conversion of starch into sugar. The
seeds of the fruit have a better effect than the pulp.
6. Neem (Azadirachtha
indica): The neem or neem tree of India is known for its medicinally
useful bitter leaves and other parts. A paste of the leaves that are taken
daily has excellent properties in reducing the sugar content of the blood.
7. Onion (Allium cepa): Onion
has hypoglycemia (ie low sugar) properties. In Ayurveda, has been investigated
for its rasayana property. Together with these properties, onion is also a mild
aphrodisiac and can promote the body's resistance. With these properties, onion
food becomes a very valuable in the treatment of diabetes.
8. Turmeric (Curcuma
longa): Turmeric is another best ayurvedic medicine for diabetes. Its effects are
felt better if taken with the amalaki (Indian gooseberry).
Dietary Treatments For Diabetes
Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic
disorder that can be severely aggravated by the wrong kind of diet. Hence, the
dietary guidelines must be followed are: -
1. Reduce or even
completely eliminate sugar in the diet. A hypoglycemic diet should be taken.
2. Obesity is one of the main
causes of diabetes. Hence, the food must be free of fat and
cholesterol-producing substances.
3. Include at least one
bitter dish in every meal.
Ayurvedic Treatment For Diabetes
If the person is obese,
then diabetes becomes more of a problem. In these people, an elaborate system
of Ayurvedic treatment is used. Preliminary methods are: -
a) Apatarpana
(malnutrition)
b) Shamshodhana (cleaning)
In these methods, the fat
in the body is reduced by de-power the body. This is followed by a cleansing of
toxins that have accumulated in the body. The panchakarma method of cleansing
the body can be used.
Once done, the body has to
be rebuilt. This is done by: -
c) Santarpana
(replacement)
d) Brumhana (promote
greater body)
If the person is
chronically ill with diabetes, these methods work. This is effective in the
treatment of diabetes in people with low weight. Through these methods, the
essential nutrients are allowed to flow in the body and the body is constructed
in a healthy manner.
Home Remedies For Diabetes
1. Follow a diet of bitter
gourd cooked in ghee for a period of three months. This causes the diabetes
down by a significant amount.
2. Soak a handful of
fenugreek seeds in water and keep them overnight. Are softened seeds morning.
3. Take a breakfast of
fruits like oranges, tomatoes and Jamuns.
4. Soak dried raisins in
water overnight. Drink the water they were soaked in the morning.
5. Prepare a choorna (fine
powder) of dry amalaki. Add this powder in water and let stand for a while.
Then filter the water and squeeze the juice of one lemon in it. This should be
taken early in the morning.
6. Prepare a choorna of
amalaki, turmeric and fenugreek taken in equal amounts. Take this choorna with
honey every morning, noon and night. This system provides relief from diabetes
in about two months.
7. Make a mixture of mango
and jamun juice taken in equal amounts. This should be taken three times a day.

I hv diebetese(2) since 8 years, and in the recent past, I hv bn diagonised with chronic pancreatitis - symptoms indigestion, weight loss. Coud I get any remedy for this disease in Ayurveda treatment?
