Ayurvedic Medicine For Migraine

More and more people are discovering that unlike modern Western media treatment of diseases, Ayurvedic route is much more beneficial. We all know that when we take on different types of drugs, our body responds in a way that our liver is affected. Another disadvantage is the ability of different diseases mutate and no longer vulnerable to drugs.

These reasons are enough to bring thousands of people looking for a new way to treat chronic headaches. Headache is a condition that most of us relate to. The pain associated with headaches can range from mild to severe, but complications can be very uncomfortable as nausea, insomnia and loss of appetite. Ailments like sinusitis, hypertension or fever can also trigger headaches.

Migraine is a very common form of headache, seen in almost 15% of the population. Women are more likely to suffer from migraine than men, and usually there is a hereditary component seen among sufferers. Migraine is known as "Ardhavabhedak" in Ayurveda. Ayurvedic treatment of migraine includes the following:

1. "Swedan" (Local fomentation): Local development is done by a procedure called "Naadi swedan". In this procedure, a steam jet is directed at medicinal forehead and around the temple area, generally after local application of certain medicinal oil. A decoction of Nirgundi (Vitex negundo) is usually used for this procedure.

2 "Nasya" (medicated nasal drops) : Nasya or medicinal oil droplets used for the treatment of migraine is of two types. The first is called "Shirovirechan", in which heavy medications, irritants are instilled as nasal drops, which induce sneezing and watery discharge. The second is called as "Avapidak Nasya 'in which a paste is prepared of a herb or several herbs, and the liquid is introduced into the nostrils. Usually, herbs like Vacha (Acorus calamus) and Pippali (Piper longum ) are used along with honey. Both procedures are designed to eliminate the cause of the headache and pain.

3 "Basti" (medicated enema): The medicated enema used in migraine is known as "Anuvasan Basti". Small amounts of medicinal oils, usually around 50 ml. occur at regular intervals, on an outpatient basis. Sesame oil and Mahanarayan oil (containing mainly Asparagus racemosus) are generally used for this purpose.

4 "Shirobasti" (scalp treatment with medicated milk or oil):  Shirobasti is a special procedure in which is mounted a cylindrical cover special shaving head and wrapped around to prevent the leakage of medicine. Medicinal oils and milk is poured in this cover so that the medicament remains in contact with the scalp for a specific time. This is done at regular intervals until improvement is noted.

5 "Dahan" (local heat branding):  Those who do not respond to standard treatment exist as vapor heat branding.

6 "Shaman" (symptomatic oral treatment) : Oral medications include Tribhuvankirti, Bhallatakasav, Triphala Guggulu and Godanti Bhasma. Several herbal medicines individual and compound is used to treat the presenting symptom of headache as well as treatment of the impurity of blood and reducing stress and anxiety.

However, a detailed history of symptoms and a detailed study of the constitutional framework of the patient is essential to choose the right combination of drugs for each patient, in order to get maximum results. 

In general, oral medications, and sometimes accompanied by some simple nasal drops, most migraine patients suffering from mild to moderate obtain a significant improvement in 1 to 3 months of treatment. Severe migraine sufferers may require longer treatment.
